The This Girl Can campaign celebrates active women who are doing their thing no matter how they look, how well they do it or how sweaty they get.

We want to challenge the conventional idea of what exercise looks like and reach out to women of all backgrounds and ethnicities who feel left behind by traditional exercise.

In doing so, we’re aiming to inspire more women and girls to wiggle, jiggle, move and prove that judgement, time, money and energy are barriers that can be overcome.

The project aims to inspire more women and girls to get moving and to prove that the common barriers many women face such as judgement, time, money and energy can be overcome.

What’s happening in Sheffield

We made a successful bid to Sport England for the funding and Sheffield City Council is now working in partnership with local communities and community organisations to promote and deliver activities in a way that will reach more women and will help them to take up exercise that meets their needs.

Four community organisations; Manor and Castle Development Trust, Shipshape, SOAR and Zest, are leading this initiative across the city, each with a new dedicated This Girl Can officer recruited to work directly with women in the community.

If you want to get involved get in touch with one of the team members below.

ZEST

Hi! I am Jean Kirby from Zest in Upperthorpe.

Although involved in fitness all my life, I came into the industry at the ripe old age of 32 just over 20 years ago! Main stream fitness was not enough for me as I wanted to make a difference to people that needed my support and understanding, so I moved into level 3 & 4 rehabilitation, cardiac, cancer, specialist populations, pre/post-natal, back care, disabilities etc. This is where my passion lies.

I like to prove to people they CAN do anything they set their minds to no matter what their ability, seeing that light bulb moment when someone achieves what they perceived to be unattainable is what gets me up in a morning.

My aim is to support as many ladies in the area and beyond as possible and show them that any GIRL CAN 😊
